How to Setup Kali Linux Machine in Virtual Box

This article is about how you can set up a Kali Linux Machine in your virtual box.

Requirements:

  1. ►Kali Linux image
  2. ►VirtualBox & Virtualbox Extension pack

Downloading Kali Linux Image:

  1. ►Go to https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vm-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/#1572305786534-030ce714-cc3b
  2. ►Click on Kali Linux Virtualbox 64-bit with size 3.6GB
  3. ►Let the file get downloaded.

Downloading & Installing VirtualBox:

  1. ►Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
  2. ►Choose Windows hosts if your platform is Windows; and since my platform is MacOS, I choose OS X hosts.

  1. ►Let Virtualbox dmg get downloaded(exe file for Windows).
  2. ►Click on the dmg file just downloaded and double click on the “VirtualBox.pkg”. You can see the image below for it.

  1. ►Once you click on the package, it will present you with an installer like the one below

  1. ►Click on Continue & Click on Install.
  2. ►Wait till the download gets completed.
  3. ►Once the installation gets done, it will present you with a message like below.

Downloading & Installing VirtualBox Extension Pack:

  • ►Virtualbox extension pack is needed for all the VM’s to use the USB and disk encryption functionalities without which a VM will not boot. Nevertheless, you can disable USB functionalities in a VM setting, but having all the functionalities is usually expected to install the VirtualBox extension pack.
  • ►Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads/
  • ►You can see a VirtualBox Extension pack for all supported platforms; click on it to download the extension pack.

  • ►Once you download the Extension pack, double click on it and install it.

  • ►The installation will take a few seconds, and thus we now have the Virtualbox installed with the Extension Pack.

Since the requirements are satisfied, let’s get started with setting up Kali Linux in VirtualBox.

Setting Up Kali Linux In VirtualBox:

  • ►Go to the Kali Linux OVA file you have downloaded in the beginning and double click on it.
  • ►It will present you with an import manager of Virtual Box as below

  • ►The Default ram allocated is 2GB which will be enough to run it smoothly, though if you only have a 4GB ram laptop, you would face some issues when you are working on intensive tasks.
  • ►After checking all the settings, click on Import and agree to the terms.
  • ►The Import will be completed in 2 to 4 minutes, and you will be able to see the Virtual Box loaded with Kali Linux as below

  • ►Now, click on Start, and you will be able to boot into your Kali.
  • ►Login with username as “kali” and password as “kali.”

It will present you with Kali GUI as you log in :
